Cardinal women make their first NCAA Championship appearance, while Kibichiy will compete in his third
Event: 2016 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships
Date: November 19, 2016
Start Times: 11 a.m. Women's Race | 12 p.m. Men's Race
Place: LaVern Gibson Championship Course at Wabash Valley Family Sport Center in Terre Haute, Indiana
The Field: The race features the top 31 teams in both the men's and women's fields in the NCAA. The women's race features four of the top 10 finishers from last year's championship. Defending Women's National Champion and current No. 6-ranked New Mexico will attempt to defend their championship, as 2015 runner-up and current No. 1 Colorado will attempt to dethrone them.
The men's race will feature seven of the top 10 finishers from last year's championship. Edward Cheserek, the individual winner in 2015, headlines these returners. No. 5 Syracuse will attempt to defend their 2015 Men's National Championship, while 2015 runner-up and No. 2 Colorado and No. 1 Northern Arizona will attempt to bring home their own championship.
About the Cardinals: After finishing second at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Va., the Louisville women's team will be back in action Saturday at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The women's race will begin at 11:00 a.m. while the men's race follows at 12:00 p.m. Senior Edwin Kibichiy will be the lone representative from the men's team in Terre Haute.
Freshman Dorcas Wasike led the women in Charlottesville with a time of 20:36.0, good enough for a seventh place finish and USTFCCCA All-Region honors. She was followed by junior Bailey Davis in 26th with a time of 21:08.5. Sophomore Caroline Gosser finished 39th for the Cardinals with a time of 21:34.5. Junior Mia Ross finished 42nd with a time of 21:40.1, followed by Adair Gennocro finished 43rd with a personal best time of 21:47.3.
Kibichiy was the only qualifier from the men's team as he finished third and posted a personal best 10K time of 28:54.5. This was good enough to earn USTFCCCA All-Region honors for the third straight year. He will look to improve on his 41st finish at last year's NCAA Championship. He earned All-American honors in 2014.
