
Women’s Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale to No. 9 Virginia, 2-1

Cardinals can’t overcome early deficit against Virginia
Louisville, Ky. – The University of Louisville (7-7-4, 2-5-3 ACC) women's soccer team fell to No. 9 Virginia (13-3-2, 6-2-2 ACC) 2-1 Thursday night at Lynn Stadium to close out the regular season.
Virginia got on the board first in the 33rd minute when they converted a penalty kick. A handball was called as Louisville attempted to clear a corner by the Cavaliers, setting up the penalty kick.
Alison Price had a chance in the 41st minute but Virginia's Morgan Stearns made the save. One minute later the Cardinals had another opportunity from Callie McKinney but Stearns stopped the ball again. In the final seconds before the half, Virginia put a ball on frame but Taylor Bucklin was there to punch the ball out.
Virginia finished the half with a 4-2 edge in shots. Bucklin finished with one save while Stearns finished with two.
Virginia scored in insurance goal in the 54th minute with a header to take the 2-0 lead. The Cardinals continued to apply offensive pressure, looking to get on the board.
The pressure paid off in the 68th minute when Price converted a service from Kaela Dickerman in front of the net. A Virginia defender knocked the ball out, but the ball crossed the line before the defender got there, cutting the lead to 2-1.
The Cardinals' best chance to score the equalizer came in the 87th minute when a ball was crossed inside the box to Brooklynn Rivers but Steans punched the ball out to secure the win.
Virginia finished the match with a slight 9-6 shot advantage and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Senior keeper Bucklin finished with two saves while Stearns finished with four saves.
