Swimming and Diving Open Home Slate with Xavier

Cards' times are amongst the fastest in the nation.
The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams open the home slate against Big East power Xavier Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

The Cardinals finished their tripleheader with the University of Michigan, with the men falling 283-188 and the women falling 266-205 in Ann Arbor. That was the men's only competition thus far, but the Cardinal women finished second at the SMU Classic. Â Michigan won the Classic with 325 points, Louisville was second with 324 followed by USC (303), UCLA (266.5), SMU (237), Miami (184.5).

Highlights from the SMU Classic came from Andrea Cottrell who was named this week's Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming Performer of the Week. Cottrell, who won ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week honors three times last season, had four first-place finishes this past weekend at the SMU Classic. No. 17 Louisville placed second behind No. 3 Michigan, edging out ranked opponents No. 4 USC and No. 19 UCLA. Cottrell swept the breaststroke, placing first in both the 100 (59.58) and 200 (2:08.74). She also swam the second leg in the 200 medley relay, whose time of 1:38.09 was a meet record. The senior swam the second leg of the first-place 400 medley relay as well with a 59.37 split helping the Cards to a time of 3:33.44.
Cottrell's  time in the 100-breaststroke is the fastest in NCAA Division I thus far in the season. Her 200-breast mark is also ranked No. 1 in Division I and she is ranked 7th in the 200-IM. Other Top 10 performers are Casey Fanz No. 4 in the 50-free (22.64) and 9th in the 100-free (49.68). Mallory Comerford is the top 100-freestyler (47.89), second in the 200-free (1:43.13) and second in the 500-free (4:37.64). Abigail Houck is No. 4 in the 200-free (1:45.98), sixth in the 100-fly (53.48), 4th in the 500-free (4:46.01) and 4th in the 200-fly (1:56.50). Grace Oglesby is ranked No. 7 in the 100-fly (53.64). Alina Kendzior is third in the 200-back (1:55.34), 7th in the 100-back (53.13) and 10th in the 200-IM (2:01.49). Marah Pugh is ranked No. 6 in the 400-IM (4:15.02).

The women are ranked first in the 200-free relay (1:30.05), and first in the 400-medley relay (3:34.44) and second in the 800-free relay (7:07.04) and 200-medley relay (1:38.09).

The Cardinal men have ten Top 10 times including the 400 Medley Relay team's No. 1-ranked time of 3:15.29 and are first in the 800-free relay (6:35.45). The men are third fastest in Division I in the 200-free relay (1:21.17), fifth in the 400-Free Relay (2:58.30) and eighth in the 200-medley relay (1:28.64).

Individual Highlights include Grigory Tarasevich's third ranked time in the 200-back (1:45.48) and No. 10-ranked 200-back time of 48.29, Etay Gurevich's fifth-ranked time in the 400-IM (3:57.84), Trevor Carroll's seventh-ranked 200-free time of 1:37.51 and Carlos Claverie's sixth ranked time in the 200-breast (2:00.16).

Xavier is coming off a weekend at the Big 12/Big East Challenge. The women beat Seton Hall (191.5-157.50) and Butler (131-71) but fell to WVU 206-144). The men fell to WVU (221-133) and Seton Hall (231-118).
