Stratton's goal lifts Cards to 1-0 win
DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Victoria Stratton's goal in the second half lifted the 12th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 1-0 win over host California Friday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 in the season while the Bears fall to 1-2.
"This was a tough and gritty win for our program," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Cal is a talented and skillful team and brought some challenges for us. I am proud of how we fought through the challenges and adversity. We continue to show signs of growth and maturity."

The Cards entered the game having outscored their first two opponents 11-1, but Stratton's second-half goal proved to be the only scoring needed as Louisville notched its second straight shutout.
The teams played through a scoreless first half with Louisville holding a 7-1 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. After the break and 10 minutes into the second half, the Cardinals drew three straight penalty corners before Stratton connected on the lone goal of the game. Senior Katharine Gwynne-Wood inserted the ball and sophomore Nicole Woods dished a pass to Stratton who registered her second goal of the season to give Louisville a 1-0 lead at the 46:41 mark in the game.
In the last eight minutes of the game, the Golden Bears threatened to score by drawing two penalty corners, but the Cardinals' defense held strong for the 1-0 final.

Freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran (3-0) collected one save en route to her second consecutive shutout. In the game, Louisville outshot Cal 11-4 and held a 7-3 edge in corners.

The Cardinals (3-0) will face UC Davis Sunday at 3 p.m. (Eastern).
