Cards notch third straight shutout
DAVIS, Calif. – The 12th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team registered its third straight shutout with a 2-0 win over host UC Davis Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 4-0 on the season while the Aggies drop to 2-4.
"We are very happy to come away with two wins this weekend," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "UC Davis plays very well on their turf and presented some difficulty for us playing our game. I am pleased with our defensive unit staying strong throughout the game and we were able to capitalize on a couple of opportunities. We are looking forward to getting home to prepare for our opening ACC opponent."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early in the first half when sophomore Stephanie Byrne sent a shot that was stopped by UC Davis goalkeeper Erica Cohen, but Byrne collected her own rebound and made good on her second try. Byrne's team-best fourth goal of the season gave Louisville a 1-0 lead at the 8:43 mark in the game.
Louisville took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Aggies 13-3 and holding an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Cohen held Louisville in check with eight saves in the first half while UofL's Ayeisha McFerran had two stops and junior Gianna Perrone added a defensive save to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard.
In the second half, Louisville capitalized on a penalty corner to add an insurance goal at the 52:02 mark in the game. Senior Katharine Gwynne-Wood got the corner started and sophomore Nicole Woods provided the stop for freshman Tess Hannah's third goal of the season which made the score 2-0. In the second half, the Cards outshot the Aggies 6-2 and held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran (4-0) collected four saves en route to her third shutout of the season. Overall, Louisville outshot UC Davis 19-5 and had a 10-3 advantage in corners. Cohen (2-4) had 11 stops for the Aggies.
UofL (4-0) will return to Trager Stadium for its ACC opener against No. 9 Virginia Friday at 6:30 p.m.
