Lauren Benner joins the Louisville Lacrosse staff
LOUISVILLE, KY. -- University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young announced the hiring of assistant coach Lauren Benner to her staff on Monday.Â
Â
"I am thrilled to announce the addition of Lauren Benner to our coaching staff," said head coach Kellie Young. Â "Lauren will take the lead as our recruiting coordinator as well contribute to the coordination of our offensive execution and goalie development."
Benner comes to U of L after five seasons as an assistant on the University of Denver lacrosse staff. Benner helped lead the Pioneers to their first NCAA Tournament in 2014, where they beat Jacksonville to advance to the Round of 16.
Â
"Lauren brings a renewed energy to Louisville Lacrosse and is dedicated to pushing our program further into the national limelight," said Young. Â "She has an innate understanding of how to succeed in both the ACC and NCAA having excelled in both the classroom and on the field as an undergrad at Virginia. Â As a student-athlete she as an all-south region goalie, won two ACC championships, appeared in four NCAA tournaments and one NCAA Final Four. Â Her coaching experience at Denver has further prepared her for the national stage having coached multiple all-region, All-Americans and Tewaaraton Award candidates in goal and on the offensive end. Â Between her experience in the ACC, coaching at a top 20 program and continued playing experience with the STX elite post collegiate lacrosse team, Lauren will no doubt be a role model for our Louisville Cardinals."
                                                                                        Â
While at Denver, Benner helped guide the Pioneers to an 18-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2013. They finished the nation ranked No. 16 in the final IWLCA Coaches Poll. The Pioneers also ranked second in the nation in caused turnovers that year.
Â
Benner finished her collegiate career by playing the 2011 season with the Pioneers. Prior to DU, Benner spent four years as a goalie at the University of Virginia, where she helped lead the Cavaliers to a pair of ACC championships and was named to the IWLCA All-South Regional team her senior year. Benner has coached with Denver Summit Lacrosse, as well as serving as director and coach at several camps held nationally for top-ranked recruits. Additionally, Benner is a rated lacrosse official, working club and high school games since 2004.
Â
"I am beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity to become a part of the Louisville women's lacrosse staff," said Benner. "The university boasts incredible athletics and academics, making it a top school in the ACC. I look forward to working with Kellie Young and Vicki Latino to continue to build upon Louisville's already exceptional lacrosse program."
Â
The Annapolis, Md., native holds bachelor's degrees in religious studies and media studies from Virginia, as well as a master's in strategic communications from the University of Denver.
