The University of Louisville women's soccer team (1-1) fell 2-1 to No. 20 Washington (1-1) on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Huskies started the game controlling the possession, taking a seven shot lead over the Cardinals in the first 20 minutes. After settling down, the Cards' first shot came in the 21st minute and sparked the Cardinal offense that held possession for the next 10 minutes.
In that span, a scrum in the box gave senior Rachel Avant the opportunity to get the Cardinals on the board first. Avant had just subbed in and found herself directly in front of the goal, and sent a shot that rolled slowly past the reach of the Washington keeper Megan Kufeld, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
Washington wasted no time in answering. The Huskies' Shannon Simon took a corner kick in the 32nd minute and found Amanda Perez for the equalizer. Both teams traded possession the final 13 minutes of the first period but no one was to find the back of the net.
Washington held a 9-6 shot advantage in the first period and a 2-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Taylor Bucklin had three saves in the first period while Kufeld finished with two.
Once again the Huskies started the second half strong, holding possession and looking to score the equalizer. The offensive pressure paid off for the Huskies in the 58th minute Bucklin deflected a ball that fell to Perez who slipped it into the right side of the net for her second goal of the game while giving Washington a 2-1 lead.
Louisville then gained possession and had two shots on goal but were unable to connect. Casey Whitfield sent a corner kick inside the box and Alison Price's header went just high in the 65th minute. Aubrey Baker had another shot on goal in the 68th minute but the keeper made the save. The Cardinal offense made a late push in the final 10 minutes but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
Washington finished the game with a 15-11 shot advantage and a slight 3-1 corner kick advantage. Bucklin and Kufeld finished with five saves each.
USWNT head coach Jill Ellis made a special appearance at the match and took the ceremonial first kick. At halftime there was a special tribute to the United States' FIFA World Cup run and Ellis took part in a Q&A with Louisville's Sean Moth for the crowd.
Following the match, the Cardinals held a special clinic featuring Ellis. After the clinic she signed autographs for the participants.
Louisville will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 29 as they travel to Kent State for a 4:30 p.m. match.
