Cardinals finish first road game in a tie
The University of Louisville women's soccer team played Kent State to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Zoeller Field. Hannah Konermann had a shot right on goal in the final seconds but the keeper made the save to secure the draw. With the tie Louisville improves to 1-1-1 on the season, while Kent State also improves to 1-1-1 for the year.
"We played a very hard-working and athletic Kent State team tonight," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I have to give them credit for making a comeback each time we took the lead. We were able to score two good goals from Casey Whitfield and Victoria Martinis but weren't able to completely stop their attack. Now our focus is on our next game against Kentucky next Friday night."
The Cardinals struck first in the 35th minute. Senior Casey Whitfield scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Bridget Stewart to give Louisville a 1-0 lead. Kent State scored the equalizer in the 37th minute for a 1-1 tie.
Neither team was able to connect in the final minutes of first period. Louisville held a 6-4 shot advantage while Kent State finished with a 1-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Paige Brown finished the first period with one save.
The Louisville offense came out strong to start the second period. The offensive pressure paid off with a goal in the 48th minute when Victoria Martinis collected a deflection in front of the goal and scored. The Cardinals continued to keep possession through much of the second period.
Kent State was able to score the equalizer in the 65th minute for a 2-2 tie. Despite a 10-5 shot advantage in the second period Louisville was unable to come up with another goal, forcing the overtime period.
Neither team had many chances in the first overtime period, as the ball stayed in the midfield most of the 10 minutes. Louisville finished the first overtime with a 2-0 shot advantage.
Louisville had more scoring chances in the final overtime but could not connect. Whitfield had a shot and Isabella Habuda had two chances. The Cards' best chance at the win came in the final seconds of the match. Konermann's shot with four seconds remaining was right on target but Kingsbury made the save to secure the draw.
The Cardinals finished the match with a 22-12 shot advantage while Kent State had a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with four saves while Kingsbury finished with seven.
Louisville will be back in action next Friday as they travel to Kentucky for a 7:30 p.m. match.
