LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 28 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Northern Kentucky 7-0 in the first match of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals (21-5) will face Eastern Kentucky at 4:30 p.m.
"I really felt that Northern Kentucky team really gave us a push," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "I like the talent level of that team, those guys did not come in here intimidated and they played hard. They had us down 5-1 on court three in doubles and almost closed us out, but Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Chris Simich took their game to another level and won a close one. One thing we are really focusing on this week and next week is to swing free. There's no reason to get nervous at this point in the season, it's way too late. Just swing free, play hard, have a good attitude out there and things will happen."
The Cardinals took the first point of the match by sweeping doubles. Van Damrongsri and Courtney Lock teamed for a 6-1 win over Jack Carney and Adrian Isache at the two-spot while the 56th- ranked duo of Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet defeated Christopher Angulo and Mate Virag 6-2 at No. 1. On court three, Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Chris Simich rallied from down 5-1 to beat Jody Maginiley and Nick Lang 7-5 and complete the doubles sweep.
In singles, eighth-ranked Stiefelmeyer quickly added to the lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mate Virag at the top-seed. Lippens followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Jack Carney at No. 5. Jeffrey Brown clinched the victory by beating Adrian Isache 6-1, 6-0 at the four-spot. Simich beat Maginley 6-3, 7-5 to make the score 6-0. The match concluded on court two where Gornet defeated Angulo 6-4, 6-4.
