Louisville, Ky. - Celebrating another year of banner accomplishments on the field and in the classroom, the University of Louisville athletic department honored its student-athletes and teams on Monday night at the second annual Louies.
The Louisville lacrosse team took home three Louies after a historical season in 2014. Monica Negron earned the Leadership Award while Faye Brust won Junior of the Year and Kaylin Morissette took home the Sophomore of the Year award.
Negron, a co-captain, helped the Cardinals to their first NCAA Tournament in school history and became the first four-time all-region honoree in program existence. She bolstered Louisville's defense as one of the top units in the country, ranking 15th nationally. The BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year started 19 games this season, logging 19 caused turnovers, 32 ground balls, and 45 draw controls. She also contributed to the Cardinals' offense, recording five goals and three assists.
Last season, Negron became the school's first four-time all-region honoree. She capped a four-year career in which she ranks first in game started (67), second in ground balls (145) and caused turnovers (92), and third in draw controls (164).
Brust had a breakthrough season last year. She combined for 26 goals in her first two seasons, then matched Boltja with 71 scores to rank third nationally as a junior. Brust also ranked third in goals per game (3.55), while boasting the 19th-most points in the nation (78). She scored six of her goals in the BIG EAST Tournament championship victory Georgetown on May 3, which helped her secure BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player accolades.
Kaylin Morissette was the 2014 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year. She broke the school's single-season record for draw controls just 10 games into the season as a sophomore and finished the year with 169. Nationally, she ranked second in the category with 8.45 per game. As a sophomore she tallied 43 goals and 12 assists, while collecting 33 ground balls.
The group helped Louisville reach its first NCAA Tournament and advance to the NCAA Sweet 16. In addition to that, Louisville won the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles.
