Rex Ecarma discusses the win over Tennessee Tech
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 23 University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Tennessee Tech 6-1 in the second match of a doubleheader Tuesday evening. The Cardinals, who had beaten Southern Illinois 6-1 in Tuesday's earlier match, improve to 17-4 on the season.
"I think these guys saved the best for last in the sense that both matches were tough," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We barely won that doubles point, it could have gone either way, Tennessee Tech fought us tooth and nail - we knew they would. We prepared for it, but they are a good doubles team."
The Cardinals jumped ahead 1-0 by taking the doubles point to start the match. The duo of Albert Wagner and Van Damrongsri gave Louisville an early advantage when they beat Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas 6-1 at No. 2. The Golden Eagles (3-12) answered on court three where Artem Tarasov and Jorge Alfonzo defeated Chris Simich and Pally Ray 6-4. The point came down to court one where Louisville's 68th ranked team of Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown outlasted Alex Arovin and Albert Esteban 7-6 to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
"I'm really proud of Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown clinching the doubles point again," said Ecarma. "Those guys are not only winners, but they are winning on the No. 1 court."
In singles action, Gornet, No. 123 in the ITA singles rankings defeated Alex Arovin 6-2, 6-1 at the top seed extend the lead to 2-0. Luis Elizondo registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Othon Lima at No. 6.
Tennessee Tech got on the scoreboard on court three where Eduardo Mena defeated Michael Lippens 6-2, 6-2 to make the score 3-1.
Jeffrey Brown clinched the win for the Cardinals at No. 5 where he beat Jorge Alfonzo 6-0, 6-4. Simich posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alvaro Cintas at No. 5 and Wagner, No. 94 in the ITA singles rankings, immediately followed with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Alberto Esteban at the two-spot.
"I'm really proud of Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown clinching it again," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Those guys are not only winners, but they are winning on the No. 1 court and clinching our doubles point."
The Cardinals return to action this weekend when they hit the road for a pair of ACC matches. Louisville will face Georgia Tech Friday at 4 p.m. and Clemson Sunday at 1 p.m.
