
Cardinals Open Indoor Season with Six Wins

Cardinals take six event titles at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Louisville track and field teams opened up the indoor season with six wins at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener on Saturday afternoon.Â
"Today was a solid start to our indoor season," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We had six event winners on the day and I'm excited about the way both teams executed across all event areas. It will be fun to watch these groups grow throughout the coming months as we prepare for the indoor championships."
On the women's side, the Cardinals won four events. Dolly Nyemah got the first win of the day in the weight throw.  Nyemah finished with a distance of 19.74m/64-9.25 to win the event. Junior Emmonnie Henderson competed for the first time in the indoor season and won the shot put. She won the event with a toss of 16.18m/53-1 for an indoor personal best.Â
Freshman Raven Grant started her career with a win in the 200 meters. She finished with a time of 24.29 for a collegiate best. Grant also finished second in the 60 meters with a personal best time of 7.55. Senior Benadate Cheruiyot rounded out the women's top finishers with a win in the 3000 meters. She paced the field with a time of 9:48.24.Â
On the men's side, the Cardinals took home two event titles. Steve Wade started the indoor season with a win in the shot put. Wade won the event with a distance of 17.16m/56-3.75. Edwin Kibichiy led the Louisville men as they finished in the first four places of the 5000 meters. Kibichiy cruised to his first win of the indoor season with a time of 14:07.40. Ernest Kibet finished second, Japhet Kipkoech finished third and Calvin Chemoiywo finished fourth. Â
Other highlights of the day were a pair of runner-up finishes in the long jump. Oliver Newport on the men's side and Bre'Yana Wash on the women's side. Newport finished with a distance of 7.23m/23-8.75 while Wash finished with a distance of 5.96m/19-6.75.Â
Junior Chanel Krause picked up where she left off last season with a runner-up finish in the pole vault. Krause cleared 4.05m/13-3.50 in her season debut.  Andrew Nsuk had a runner-up finish in the 400 meters. He clocked a personal best indoor time of 49.15. Teammate Antoine Keys finished third in the event with a time of 49.29.Â
The Cardinals will return to action after the holiday break on Jan. 15 to compete in the UK Invite.Â
