Cards return to Trager Stadium to face UMass Sunday at 1 p.m.
DURHAM, N.C. – The ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-0 to No. 5 Duke Friday at Duke's Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
"We played in very tough conditions tonight that we didn't do a great job adapting to," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We started slow and gave up an early goal that hurt us. Duke was fundamentally better and won the 50/50 battles. We now need to regroup for Sunday's game."
The rain-soaked game featured an early goal by Duke's Hunter Bracale who capitalized on an assist from Heather Morris at just over three minutes into the game.
The Blue Devils (7-3, 1-2 ACC) took the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Cardinals 5-3 while Louisville held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.
In the second half, the teams continued to battle in the rain before Duke added a second goal, this time Morris sent a feed to Robin Blazing who gave the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead. Duke would go on to outshoot Louisville 6-4 in the second half while the Cards had five penalty corners to the Blue Devils' three.
Louisville freshman goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran (6-4) had two saves in the game while Duke's Lauren Blazing (7-3) had three stops. In the game, Duke outshot Louisville, 11-7 while the Cards held an 8-3 lead in penalty corners. The game marks only the second time Louisville has been shut out this season. The first time was Sept. 18 when the Cards fell 5-0 at then-No. 3 North Carolina.
Louisville (6-4, 0-4 ACC) will return to Trager Stadium to face Massachusetts Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink for the Cards' annual 'Pink Game' to promote awareness and raise money for breast cancer research.
