Cards are 6-0 in ACC
Erin Fairs had 15 kills to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-15, 25-19 win over Clemson to stay undefeated in the ACC at 6-0.
The Cards hit .400 for the match with five aces and nine blocks. UofL, 12-4 overall, out-dug the Tigers 62-36. Katie George had a match-high 43 assists and Tess Clark and Maggie DeJong each added four blocks. Clemson (5-13, 0-6)was led by Leah Perri's nine kills.
"I thought our blockers, Maggie DeJong and Tess Clark, were impressive today. They came up with 15 kills between them. I like to see them in the offense and not just blocking. I thought our serving subs, Gabbie Wiley and Lyndsay Palmer, who had three aces between them, gave us a great punch from the service line," said head coach Anne Kordes.
In the first set, UofL blew out to a 5-0 lead but Clemson dug in and got to within four points at 16-12. UofL counterpunched with a 7-1 run to go up 22-13. Clemson managed two more points before Erin Fairs closed the set down with a kill from the left. The Cards hit .581 and had two blocks and an ace, outdigging the Tigers 17-7.
Clemson regrouped and took a 5-4 lead early but then let the Cards run eight straight points to go up 12-5. The Tigers got as close as two at 14-12 on an ace by Sofia Hruby. The Cards pulled steadily away for the 25-15 win. Cards hit .367 in that set and added three blocks.
In the third set, the Cards hit .333 with another pair of blocks. Clemson stayed close and just trailed by two at 19-17 but the Cards shut the door with a 6-2 run for the 25-19 win.
The Cardinals return to the KFC Yum! Center for matchups with Wake Forest and Duke this Friday and Sunday as the ACC slate rolls on.Â
