Women's Soccer Defeats Kent State 3-2 in Overtime

Louisville, Ky.--
The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Kent State in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. Freshman Alison Price scored the game winning goal just 1:58 into the overtime to seal the win for the Cardinals.
"We had to get adjusted to a lot of new kids in our lineup," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "When we worked in practice on the defensive side of the ball, we were great defensively in games. Then when we worked on the attacking side of the ball, we were great offensively. I think the second half today was indicative of layering the both defending pieces with the attacking pieces. I think that's why we saw I think 17-0 (shots) in the second half."
Kent State (4-2-0) applied pressure early in the first half, which paid off in the eighth minute of play when Doni Capehart scored off of a header to put the Golden Flashes up 1-0. Ferguson-Dayes made some adjustments to the lineup shortly after, moving Chatham DeProspo and Hannah Konermann to the back line.
Despite offensive pressure from Louisville (3-4-0) throughout the rest of the half, the Cardinals were unable to get on the board. Kent State's Stephanie Haugh put the Golden Flashes up 2-0 at the 37:41 mark when she took a straight shot from 25 yards out that soared into the top corner of the goal.
Both teams finished the first half with four shots, but the Cardinals led in corners kicks 2-0.
Louisville came out in the second half and put immediate pressure on the Golden Flashes' defense, forcing the Kent State goalkeeper to make three saves in the first five minutes of play. With 37:12 left to play, freshman Kaela Dickerman scored her first goal of the season after a scramble in the box and taking the ball of the defender's foot for a straight shot inside of the box.
"We had a lot of chances because specifically our backs were able to create a lot of attack for us," said Ferguson-Dayes. " Specifically Hannah's shape at the back and Chatham was really calm, poised and controlled with the ball at her feet. We looked a lot better at the back in the second half. Certainly, it would be a disservice to not talk about the front three, Bella was fantastic, Kaela Dickerman was fantastic and Alison Price has been fantastic so it was nice for her finally get a goal."
The Cardinals continued to pressure Kent State, and with just under five minutes left in regulation, freshman Isabella Habuda scored the equalizer off of a cross from junior Konermann. The goal was Habuda's third of the season and first since scoring twice in the Cards' season opener. After 90 minutes of play, the scored remained tied sending the match into overtime.
In overtime, senior Chinyelu Asher received the ball outside of the Kent State box and fed the ball to Price, who drilled the ball through the keeper's legs for the 3-2 win. The Cardinals outshot the Golden Flashes 22-4, including a 17-0 in the second half. Louisville also earned six corner kicks to Kent State's one. Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown recorded one save on the afternoon, while Kent State's Stephanie Senn finished with 11.
Working hard against Kent State paid off in the end, as Louisville recorded the win after a few tough losses over the past two weeks.
The Cardinals' focus is now on their next opponent and the transition into ACC competition. The Cardinals will host the Syracuse in the ACC opener on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
"Obviously we had to focus on today's game in lieu of the events previously," Ferguson-Dayes explained. "Now we'll refocus our efforts on Syracuse."
