Women's Soccer Defeats Syracuse 1-0 in ACC Opener
September 20, 2014 | Women's Soccer
The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated Syracuse 1-0 on Friday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals win the ACC opener and improve to 4-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league. The Orange fall to 3-3-3 on the year and 0-1-0 in the ACC.
"I thought we played very, very well in the first half and we might have lost some of our composure in the second half," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "But I give credit to Syracuse, they are a good team and made us get a little rattled and play a little faster than we wanted to. I was really happy at the end of the game with the younger kids' decision to hold the ball and keep the ball at the end of the game and understand time and score that late in the game. Overall I was very excited about a win in the ACC."
The Cardinals struck early, scoring off a set piece. Senior Erin Yenney tapped the corner kick to freshman Victoria Martinis who gave the ball back to Yenney inside the box. Yenney snuck the ball in just past the goal line for a 1-0 lead.
The Louisville defense held Syracuse without a shot in the first half. Isabella Habuda had another chance for the Cardinals in the 12th minute but Syracuse's keeper made the save. Habuda had another chance in the 31st minute but the keeper was there to make the save again.
The Cardinals finished the first half with a 6-0 shot advantage and both teams finished with one corner kick.
The Orange pressed early in the second half, trying to score the equalizer. In the 52nd minute Cardinal keeper Paige Brown was tested and made the save. Five minutes later Brown came up with another save.
Lexie Niedoba had a chance for the Cardinals in the 66th minute but the keeper made the save. Habuda had her third shot on goal in the 73rd minute but was unable to convert. Syracuse's last chance came in the 74th minute but Brown made the save.
Louisville was able to keep the ball away from Syracuse in the final minutes to secure the win and the shutout. It was the second shutout of the season for Brown.
Louisville finished the game with a 10-3 shoot adventage while Syracuse held a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with three saves while Syracuse's Courtney Brosnan finished with four saves.
The Cardinals will now play three consecutive games on the road, beginning with No. 7 Florida State on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
