
Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Illinois

"Illinois was a great test for our young team," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We created a lot of chances and played very well for stretches of the game. We just have to find a way to reward ourselves when we are getting so many chances. I am optimistic moving forward because this group is very coachable and wants to win."
Louisville had the first opportunity of the match off a shot by freshman Victoria Martinis in the sixth minute but Illinois' Michelle Denley made the save. Martinis had another opportunity in the 22nd minute but couldn't finish. Two minutes later the Cards' had back-to-back opportunities from Shannon Dennehey and Martinis but Denley collected both shots.
Illinois' first chance came in the 29th minute off a header by Nicole Breece but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown made the save. The defense blocked another shot by the Illinois offense in the 32nd minute. The Fighting Illini earned a corner kick in the 41st minute. Abby Elinisky's corner kick sailed over Brown's head in the right side of the net to give Illinois a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Louisville finished the first half with a 7-4 shot advantage over Illinois. Illinois held a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Illinois finished the half with four saves while Brown finished with one save.
Illinois took advantage of the first half momentum and scored in the 47th minute for a 2-0 lead. Louisville continued to press offensively to get on the board. Freshman Alison Price had a shot in the 54th minute that was collected by the keeper. Dennehey had a shot blocked by the defense in the 58th minute. The Cardinal defense tightened up and did not allow another shot on goal.
Dennehey had an opportunity in the 79th minute by it was collected by the keeper. Louisville finished the match with a 13-8 shot advantage while corner kicks were even with both teams finishing with four. Illinois finished with six saves between two keepers while Brown finished with one save.
Louisville will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 29 as they host Ole Miss at 6:00 p.m. for the opening game in the Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Single game tickets for Louisville's highly anticipated debut season at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium and in the Atlantic Coast Conference are available for purchase through the UofL Ticket Office. Tickets for each of the Cardinals' first two matches on Friday, Aug. 29 against Ole Miss (6 p.m., ET) and on Friday, Sept. 5 against Kentucky (6 p.m.) can be purchased online here through My Cardinal Account. Ticket prices are $12 for reserved chairback seats (preferred seating) and $9 for general admission berm and bleacher seats. On both Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, the men's games will be preceded by women's games and tickets will provide admission to both matches each day.
Single game tickets for each of the Cardinals' 10 regular season matches at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium this fall are currently on sale and can be purchased in person through the UofL Ticket Office at Gate 2 of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
