Men's Tennis August Update
August 15, 2014 | Men's Tennis
The University of Louisville men's tennis program has produced some impressive results in the summer of 2014. Alex Gornet finished runner-up in the Little Wildcard Tennis Tournament, Sebastian Stiefelmeyer defended his Austria Outdoor Championship title and former Cardinal great Andrew Carter continued his success on the professional circuit at the Citibank Open.
Gornet, a rising junior from Louisville, Ky., put together three straight wins to reach the finals of Little Wildcard Tennis Tournament in Edwardsville, Ill. Gornet fell 6-3, 6-4 to Kyle Koch in the title match.
"Alex had been playing quite a bit in then last month," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "So many of the top college players play these events to get ready for the fall season and develop their games. Last summer, Alex was injured. So this year, he is starting the fall with momentum."
Stiefelmeyer, a rising senior from Vienna, Austria, captured his second consecutive Austrian Outdoor Championship title after going 5-0 in the 32-player draw and winning four of those matches in straight sets.
"Winning your country's national championship is very difficult but defending it is even harder," said Ecarma. "Sebastian did both and seems to be really improving especially in the mental toughness area. He looks like he is ready to start a special senior year."
Carter, who played for the Cardinals from 2009-12, picked up a 6-4, 6-4 qualification first round win over Justin Shane in the Citibank Open in Washington D.C.
"Andrew continues to live his dream as a professional tennis player," said Ecarma. "Defeating a player ranked in the top 500 in the world is a very good win."
