October 21, 2014 | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio - The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Ohio University 2-0 Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 12-4 on the season while the Bobcats move to 3-9.
"We're very happy to leave with a good win for our program," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "It took a while to score as Ohio played us tough. Our focus was to keep moving the ball in attack and defend with composure and good layering. We can always improve, but overall it was a solid performance and moving in the right direction.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half in which Louisville outshot Ohio 4-0 and held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.
After the break, the Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, when they capitalized on the first corner of the second half. Senior Alyssa Voelmle deflected junior Elisa Garcia's initial shot into the cage for her team-best ninth goal of the season.
UofL held the 1-0 lead until two minute remaining in the match. Garcia fired off another corner shot which was tipped by freshman Nicole Woods for her third goal of the season to make the score 2-0.
In the game, Louisville outshot Ohio 8-3 and had seven corners to the Bobcats' one. Junior goalkeeper Sydney King (12-4) had one save en route to her second straight shutout - she now has four on the season. Ohio's Brittany Walker (3-9) had three stops in the match.
The Cardinals will return to action on Friday. Oct. 24 when they play host to UC Davis in their home finale. UofL will honor seniors Hannah Boyle, Becca Maddock, Rachel McCarthy, Mallory Mason, Paige Monsen and Alyssa Voelmle.
SHOE DRIVE FRIDAY: As part of the campus wide sustainability week initiative, Student-Athletes Taking Action (SATA) will be hosting a WaterStep Shoe Drive collection at Friday's Field Hockey game vs. UC Davis at 6 p.m. Bring in any new, used, or old shoes at the provided bins as part of athletics' efforts to support the cause. Donated shoes will support water projects in underdeveloped communities around the world, providing safe drinking water to someone that needs it. It is estimated that 3.4 million people die every year from waterborne illnesses and UofL is looking to collect 34,000 shoes by November 19.
