LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It wasn't only Maggie Hyland's play that caught the eye of University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young. Her ability to play multiple positions attracted the Cardinals' staff, and her signing, coupled with the incoming talent, caused for excitement.
The lone Virginia native in the class, Hyland has earned all-district honors twice in lacrosse at James W. Robinson Secondary under coach Elizabeth Case. The Fairfax resident, who has played all four years at the varsity level, collected first-team accolades as a junior, a year after being named to the all-district second team in 2012 as a sophomore.
"Maggie is the definition of versatile," Young said. "In recruiting her, she played anywhere and did anything her coaches asked. She excelled on the draw, behind the crease, and in transition, all while playing with a maturity beyond her years."
Hyland enjoyed a successful freshman year in high school as well. In addition to making the varsity lacrosse squad, she was named to the 2011 Concorde District Group AAA all-tournament team. That year, along with 2012, she was nominated to try out for the U.S. Women's U-19 National Team.
Away from the high school scene, Hyland has played for the Cardinal Girls Lacrosse Club 2014 Red Team. She was a member of the squad's U-15 national team.
"The relationships between the players and the coaches made me feel right at home," Hyland, a two-time team captain said. "I could tell the first time I met the team that they were comfortable to be a part of it. The girls on the team told me that they feel like the coaches are their second and third moms. They can go to them about more than just lacrosse. This made me feel at ease, as I'll be far from home."
Currently, Hyland is a member of the Student Government Association and was elected president of the Choir Council.
One of three children, she is the daughter of Chuck and Mary Hyland.
