LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young announced the program's fall schedule on Monday, highlighted by a home contest against Michigan and an alumnae game both in October.
"We are excited about the level of competition we will face this fall in a mixture of Ivy League, ACC, and Big Ten teams," Young said. "Opponents will challenge us with different styles of defense, zones and sets than we've seen in a few years, creating a more prepared team and a more dynamic style of play for Louisville Lacrosse."
The Cardinals open competition on Sept. 28 at Boston University, which finished 6-10 last season. The Terriers recorded two upset victories during the 2013 season, posting wins over No. 14 Massachusetts to open the season and 15th-ranked Ohio State.
The squad lost its two top scorers to graduation, making Elizabeth Morse the team's offensive leader for this year after finishing 2013 with 24 goals and nine assists. Rising sophomores Jill Horka, who led the team in caused turnovers last year, and Sofia Robbins garnered all-America East honors.
A day later, Louisville is scheduled to participate in the Harvard Tournament on Sept. 29 in Cambridge, Mass. The tournament host Crimson return two of their top playmakers in Audrey Todd, who scored 25 goals and dished out nine assists as a freshman, and Alexis Nicolia, who had 23 goals also in her first year with the program.
After a trip to the Johns Hopkins Tournament starting on Oct. 6 in Baltimore, Md., the Cardinals will play host to their annual banquet on Oct. 11 with matches against Michigan and the program's alumnae the following day on Oct. 12.
Michigan is beginning its first year in school history of varsity women's lacrosse this season and will be a member of the American Lacrosse Conference in 2014. The squad is under the direction of Jennifer Ulehla, who spent from 2008-10 as an assistant coach at Florida.
