Hey Card Volleyball Fans! Today was a great day for the UofL Volleyball team. I know you're about to ask, "Why?" No need, I'm here to tell you all about it.
We started preseason today with double sessions. Which means we started with breakfast at our practice facility. At breakfast we had a variety to choose from thanks to Zach Farrel, our strength coach, who makes sure we eat all the right things before competition.
After breakfast we headed to the gym to start our first practice since this past spring. Everyone was super excited to get back in the gym and get after it. Everyone had great energy and intensity. I felt like we were already getting better in just a few short hours. Our freshmen did a great job today. They were focused and willing to learn. We finished our morning session with defensive drills. My knees, hips and elbows really enjoyed themselves. (sarcasm font)
We then headed to the ice baths in our training room where we piled fifteen girls into two ice tubes. Let's just say we're a pretty close group of girls. Lunch followed our treatment on campus at U-Club. Zach walked us through the buffet line teaching us all about different food groups and what we needed to put into our bodies. Courtney Robison learned that vegetable soup is indeed good for you. I don't know which vegetable threw her off but she learned something new today. Brooke Mattingly and I helped ourselves to two plates and salads. We like to eat, plain and simple. It's a hobby of ours.
I then went home and took a nap. Don't worry I showered first because I care about personal hygiene unlike some girls on our team! I won't mention any names. My alarm rang too soon and I was up and out the door to head back for the second session.
Second session was even better then the first. We played more six-on-six this time. Alums Lola Arslanbekova and Gwen Rucker joined us during our scrimmage. It was nice having them in the gym again. We finished with competitive trips at the end of practice. Where Assistant Alex Wilharm's team beat Janelle Jenkins, Sydney Cooper, Lola and myself. I wouldn't say it was the fairest game having Alex across the net, but hey you have to play the best to be the best!
After our second session a few of us had to rush off to the St. Joe's Picnic to promote our upcoming season. Before we did that we headed back into the ice tubs where Caitlin Welch sprained her toe because she slipped and almost dove head first into the ice bath. Unfortunately, I was the only one in the ice bath with her at the time so no one else witnessed her gracefulness at its finest. I wish she had hit the water face first. It would have been hilarious stuff!
After the ice baths we rushed to St. Joe's. Anne drove Emily Juhl, Courtney Robison, Caitlin Welch and myself to the picnic. I'm just glad we made it there safely. I don't think anyone trusts Anne's driving abilities. Once there, we met our marketing advisor, Brian U'Sellis. We passed out schedules and flyers to all those wearing Louisville attire and even tried to give some Kentucky fans our schedule. Well, I take that back, Courtney tried to give Kentucky fans our schedule and failed miserably. Regardless, we got a lot of love from fans at the picnic, even gave out my number to a few cute high school boys so they'd come to our games. I'm all about the fans you see. I'll take one for the team if that puts one more butt in a seat.
It was a great first day for Louisville Volleyball. We had a blast and I cannot wait for our season to start. I'm super excited and you should be too! Big things our happening at Louisville and I want you to be apart of it. I'm Katie George, your sophomore setter. Peace!
