
Swimming Completes Competition at World Qualifier

Indianapolis, Indiana played host last week for the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and the World Championship Trials. From June 25th through June 29th the fastest swimmers from across the nation came to compete for a spot on the United States National Team that will be traveling to Barcelona, Spain in July. The top two finishers in each Olympic event will automatically qualify to represent the United States on the international stage.
Four Cardinals had qualified for a chance to final and potentially make the United States National Team. Rising senior Kameron Chastain, rising senior Gisselle Kohoyda, rising sophomore Nolan Tesone, and rising sophomore Kelsi Worrell were the four athletes that represented the University of Louisville in Indianapolis.
Kelsi Worrell an All- American from her freshman year was the only Cardinal to race on June 25th, day one of World Championship Trials. Worrell swam the Women's 100-Meter freestyle where she finished 49th in the nation in 58.27.
June 26th, day two of World Championship Trials earned the Cardinals second swims. Gisselle Kohoyda swam a 2:30.94 in the Women's 200-Meter breastroke to earn her 11th seed for the Consolation final later that evening. In finals, Kohoyda finished 13th in the nation in a final time of 2:32.42.
Nolan Tesone was the second Cardinal to compete on day two where he swam the Men's 200-Meter backstroke and finished 31st in a time of 2:04.35.
Kelsi Worrell was the first Cardinal to swim in a 50 of stroke, competing in the 50-Meter butterfly. Worrell finished 10th in the prelims in a quick time of 27.30 to earn her a second swim in the Consolation final that evening. Worrell was just off her prelim swim, and finished 12th in the nation against national team member Rachel Bootsma, with a time of 27.39.
Day Three of the five- day trials had the most swims for the Cardinals. Nolan Tesone started the momentum for the Cardinals in the 400-Meter Individual Medley where he finished 31st in a time of 4:31.91.
Kelsi Worrell was the next Cardinal to race in the Women's 100-Meter butterfly. Worrell finished 27th in the prelims in 1:01.29. Worrell earned a second swim in the C-final and finished 24th in the nation with a final time of 1:01.68.
The next 50 of stroke for the Cardinals was the 50-Meter breastroke. Gisselle Kohoyda swam a prelim time of 34.70 to place her 26th. Kohoyda was scratched in for a second swim in the C- Final of the 50-Meter breastroke and finished 24th in a faster time of 34.22.
Kameron Chastain also swam the 50-Meter breastroke for the Cardinals. In prelims Chastain proved he deserved another final swim due to his prelim time of 28.71 earning him 13th. In the Consolation Final Chastain bettered his prelim time to a 28.52 and finished 10th in the nation to wrap up day three for the Cardinals.
Friday, June 28th the Women and Men's 100-Meter breastroke was the only event for the Cardinals. Gisselle Kohoyda swam to a 31st place finish in a time of 1:13.02. Kameron Chastain swam a prelim time of 1:02.89 earning him another Consolation final, seeding him 13th for finals. In the evening Chastain was just off his prelim swim finishing 14th in the nation in 1:02.91, beating out Olympic Gold Medalist, Mark Gangloff.
The last day of the five- day meet for the Cardinals ended with Kelsi Worrell sprinting the Women's 50-Meter freestyle in 27.01 for 35th in the nation.
The Cardinals had a strong showing at the Phillips 66 National Championships and the World Championship Trials. Kameron Chastain, Gisselle Kohoyda, and Nolan Tesone are beginning to train for their final meet of the summer in Irvine, California to compete at the 2013 U.S. Open, July 30th through August 3rd.
