
Men' Golf Tied for Fifth at BIG EAST Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Louisville finished the first day of the BIG EAST Championships in a tie for fifth place at the 2013 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Notre Dame took a two-stroke lead scoring a 288 (E) to top the standings and had three players score in the top-10, including Paul McNamara (T2, 70, -2), Niall Platt (T6, 71, -1) and Cory Sciupider (T10, 72, E).
The Cardinals are in a three-way tie DePaul and Villanova all recorded scores of 297 (+9) in the first round.
Robin Sciot-Siegrist leads the Cardinals after the first round, sitting in 10th place after firing 72, while Charlie Macneal is in a tie for 19th after his 74.
Gus Lundquist is tied for 27th after his first day score of 75, while Antoine LeSaux and Maz Walz are tied for 33rd after carding 76 on Sunday.
USF trails Notre Dame by two strokes (290, +2) and also has three players in the top-10 including Chase Koepka (T2, 70, -2), Jeffrey Meltzer (T6, 71, -1) and Trey Valentine (T10, 72, E). The Bulls are in pursuit of their first BIG EAST title. Koepka and Meltzer combined for 11 birdies in the first round.
Marquette finished the first round with a 292 (+4) to take third in the standings. Zach Gaugert led the Golden Eagles with a 71 (T6, -1). Three of Marquette's players tallied four birdies each including Gaugert, Patrick Sanchez (72, T10) and Will Joiner (76, T33).
Connecticut's Zach Zaback led Connecticut to fourth in the standings (294, +6) with a 70 (-2). The freshman birdied four holes on the back nine to finish tied for second.
Cincinnati's David Tepe leads the individual competition. The senior was the only player to shoot sub-70 to finish three under par with a 69. Tepe's 69 is his career-best 18-hole score at the BIG EAST championship.
