LAS VEGAS - The No. 18 University of Louisville softball team fell 10-1 to host UNLV Friday in the UNLV Sportco Kick-Off Classic.
"Our pitching did not show up today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We also came out very flat offensively and that is not a good combination. We have regroup and come out ready to play tomorrow."
UNLV (1-0) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first. Taylor Aleman led off with a double and an error allowed Garie Blando to reach. Two outs later Katie Uriarte's three-run homer put three unearned runs on the board.
Louisville (1-1) got a run back in the top of the second when Jordan Trimble reached on an error and Whitney Arion followed with a single. Jasmine Smithson-Willett's double sent Trimble home to make the score 3-1. The Cards had bases loaded with two outs, but could not push another run across.
The Rebels added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third when Samantha Juarez's two-out single down the left field line plated pinch runner Heather Harrison. Tayler Van Acker followed with an RBI hit to increase UNLV's lead to 5-1.
The Cards had a chance to score in the third when they loaded the bases with no outs after Katie Keller doubled, Alicja Wolny singled and Taner Fowler reached on a fielder's choice that saw all runners safe. A double play and a groundout ended the inning.
UNLV used five hits and a Louisville error to score five runs in the fourth.
Caralisa Connell (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs, two earned, and striking out three in 4.0 innings of work. Smithson-Willett allowed four runs, three earned in relief.
Amanda Oliveto (1-0) got the win, allowing one unearned run on four hits and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Juarez, Van Acker and Jaexenne Baliea each had two hits for the Rebels. Katie Uriarte was 1 for 2 with four RBIs and two runs.
Louisville (1-1) will face DePaul in a non-conference game at 12 p.m. (EST) Saturday.
