Check GoCards.com each week for the latest installment of Checkin' It with Monica, a weekly blog by two-time all-region honoree Monica Negron and her insight into the women's lacrosse program.
Nothing can compare to game day and, right as we wake up, we are sure to let the world know the time, location and opponent. Tweeting, Facebook statuses, Instagrams; basically we spread the word through all media devices. Sophomore Kendall Gordon displayed a fine job of marketing the Ohio State win via Twitter.
For a 2 p.m. game, we start off the day at 10 a.m. for breakfast at the Crowne Plaza, and whenever there is food involved, our team is sure to get there as early as possible. Always matching head to toe, we are asked if we play basically every other sport besides lacrosse. Being a team of nearly 30, we love when asked if we are the volleyball team. Our tallest player may be 5-foot-10, with an average around 5-foot-6; clearly, we aren't the volleyball team.
After pre-game meal, phones are turned into the notorious phone bag in efforts to take away all distractions and focus on the day's mission. After saying our farewell to our phones, a good majority go back to Yum! Center to our locker room, or to start pre-game treatments. Whether it's relaxing on the couches, doing dance offs to the blaring music, or finally perfecting game day hair (look good feel good play good), the energy in the locker room is contagious.
Once the players begin filtering in, the talks about which uniform to be worn or the amount of clothing that needs to be worn is the topic of interest. Razor Back or Long sleeve, we have some that will never wear the long-sleeve uniforms unless it's substantially below freezing. Then, there are others that will wear long sleeves at all times unless it is 75 degrees or higher.
Once the uniform is picked, hair is finished, and our eye black is on, our game prep ends and the main event begins.
Stay tuned to find out what we do for the remainder of game day!
