De Lucca Wins 200-Free at US SC Nationals

Defending NCAA champion Joao De Lucca continued his dominance of the 200-free, winning the AT&T Short Course National Championship as part of a strong showing by the Cardinals Friday night at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center, hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
In the men's 200-free, in a highly touted showdown, Joao De Lucca set a new championship record with a time of 1:31.65, just edging Darian Townsend's 1:31.93. Only eight men have ever broken the 1:32.00 barrier in the 200-free.
The women's 200-medley relay team finished second with a time of 1:38.07 posted by Krissie Brandenburg (24.86), Andrea Cottrell (27.83), Kelsi Worrell (22.87) and Rachael Lewis (22.51). The swim set a new school record.
In the men's 200-medley relay, Grigory Tarasevich (22.08), Kameron Chastain (24.26), Aaron Young (20.97) and Caryle Blondell (19.09) combined for a third place time of 1:26.40.
In the men's 400-IM, Nolan Tesone finished 8th with a time of 3:50.49.
In the 100-fly, in an event won by former Olympian Claire Donahue of Western Kentucky, who posted a 51.69. U of L's Kelsi Worrell was third with a atime of 51.94, dropping .50 off her prelim time. Devon Bibault was 14th in 54.55. In the men's 100-fly, Aaron Young was sixth in 46.87 and Pedro Coutinho was 12th in 47.33 and Josh Quallen was 13th in 47.43.
In the women's 200-free, Andrea Kneppers was 20th overall with a time of 1:48.13.
Andrea Cottrell won the B-Final with a time of 1:00.96 with teammate Gisselle Kohoyda touching 12th with a time of 1:01.47.
In the men's 100-breast, Kameron Chastain was 8th with a time of 53.41. Addison Bray won the B-final in 53.32.
In the 100-back, Kristina Steins was 18th overall with a time of 54.04 and Krissie Brandenburg was 20th in 54.36. Freshman Grigory Tarasevich was seventh in the men's event with a time of 47.10.
In the 800-free relay, the women took sixth with a time of 7:13.95. Kelsi Worrell led off with a split of 1:47.43 followed by Andrea Kneppers' 1:49.49 and Abigail Houck's 1:48.44 with an anchor of 1:48.59 by Breann McDowell.
The men reached the podium with a third place finish of 6:24.73 posted by Trevor Carroll (1:35.92), Matthias Lindenbauer (1:36.70), Joao De Lucca (1:34.28) and an anchor swim by Ruben Izarra of 1:37.83.
Competition continues on Saturday morning with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. with the mile being contested at 2:20 ET.
