
Swimming and Diving Complete Day 1 at North Carolina

The Cardinal swimming and diving team had a strong first day of competition against North Carolina in the two day meet at Khoury Pool in Chapel Hill on Friday evening.
The two team will complete the two-day format tomorrow afternoon with the Tarheel women leading 100-67 and the U of L men trailing just 83-81.
The Cards were paced by multiple event winners Kelsi Worrell (200-free relay, 100-free), Tanja Kylliainen (200-IM, 200-fly), Kameron Chastain (100-breast, 200-medley relay), Grigory Tarasevich (200-back, 200-medley relay) and Caryle Blondell (100-free, 200-medley relay)
The Cardinal women started out strongly with a win in the 200-free relay. Kelsi Worrell (23.32), Andrea Kneppers (22.91), Rachael Lewis 23.34 and Breann McDowell (22.94) combined for a time of 1:32.51. The men won this event with Caryle Blondell, Joao De Lucca, Kameron Chastain and Trevor Carroll went 1:20.67 for the win.
Tanja Kylliainen won the 200-IM with a time of 1:59.92, the only swimmer under two minutes. Temamate Erica Belcher was third in 2:03.89. For the men's 200-IM, Nolan Tesone was second with a time of 1:50.20.
Freshman Abbie Houck was the top Cardinal swimmer in the 500-free with a 4:55.94 for fourth with Devon Bibault touching fifth in 5:00.10. The men's Trevor Carroll was third with a 4:31.66.
Andee Cottrell was second in the hotly contested 100-breast, touching in 1:03.51 with teammate Lucy Kramer touching fourth in 1:05.64. Gisselle Kohoyda went 1:06.70. Kameron Chastain and Addison Bray made it a 1-2 sweep, going 55.24 and 55.06 respectively. Thomas Dahlia was fourth in 56.34.
In the 200 back, Erica Belcher was the top Cardinals swimmer with a third place in 2:01.50. Krissie Brandenburg was right behind her with a 2:01.71. Newcomer Grigory Tarasevich took top honors in the men's event with a 1:45.90, almost two seconds ahead of the field. Aaron Green was fourth in 1:48.04.
In the 100-free, Kelsi Worrell held off a hard charging threesome of Tarheels for the win, going 50.32. The men also won, with Caryle Blondell hitting the wall first in 43.85. Teammate Joao De Lucca was second in 43.91.
Tanja Kylliainen dominated the field for her second win of the day, posting a 1:56.90 in the 200-fly, almost three seconds ahead of UNC's Emma Nunn. Cardinal freshman Josh Quallen was the top finisher for the men with a fifth place finish in 1:51.22.
In the women's 1-meter diving, Emily Stalmack was third with a score of 253.35. Andrea Acquista was fourth boarding a 252.23. For the men, Sam Blair was third with a score of 253.95.
In the final event of the first day, the 400-medley relay the Cardinal women were second with a time of 3:42.92 posted by Erica Belcher Andee Cottrell, Kelsi Worrell and Breann McDowell. The men won their event with a time of 3:16.21. Grigory Tarasevich led off with a 49.11, Kameron Chastain was second in 54.61, Pedro Coutinho posted a 48.57 and Joao De Lucca anchored with a split of 43.92.
