No. 18 Women's Soccer Edges Purdue in Double Overtime

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Katie Walz connected for her first goal of the season in the second overtime period to lift the 18th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team to a 4-3 comeback win over visiting Purdue on Friday night at Cardinal Park.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 2-0-0 overall, while the Boilermakers dropped to 2-1-0 on the season. Louisville won its home-opener for the third time in four seasons and the fifth time in seven years.
"It was definitely an exciting game for the fans, but maybe too exciting for me," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought we were great from the middle third to the final third and that was reflected in us being able to score four goals. I thought we were a little out of character in the back. I thought we were hesitant and we just didn't trust ourselves the way that we normally do. A staple of this program has been our back four, so that was a little off tonight. But with the quality of kids we have in the back, we'll watch some video, they'll get fired up and we will be better next Friday."
After the two teams played a scoreless 10 minutes in the first overtime period, Walz (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart HS) found the back of the net from 25 yards away in the second minute of the second overtime for her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Both career goals for Walz are overtime game-winners with the first coming in last season's 1-0 victory over Butler.
Friday's game-winner was setup by a pass from junior Charlyn Corral (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnologico de Monterrey), who had two assists in the game to take her season total to three.
Louisville opened the scoring early in Friday's match when junior Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) headed in a corner kick from sophomore Devyn Ciotti (Liberty, Ohio/Lakota West HS) in the fifth minute of action for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of two on the night for Uremovich, while the assist for Ciotti was her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
The Cardinals' lead was short-lived as Purdue junior Jordan Pawlik connected for a pair of goals in the 20th and 21st minutes to give the Boilermakers a 2-1 lead. Louisville answered late in the first half when sophomore Casey Whitfield (Louisville, Ky./Manual HS) took a pass from junior Nicole Mitchell (Guelph, Ont./Bishop Macdonell HS) down the left side and beat Purdue goalkeeper Clara Kridler into the right corner of the goal to even the score in the 40th minute. The goal for Whitfield was her second of the season, while the assist for Mitchell was her first of 2012.
The game remained even to open the second half before action was delayed briefly midway through the period after a power surge caused a power outage at Cardinal Park. Play quickly resumed following a five-minute delay during the 67th minute.
Purdue followed the stoppage by regaining the lead in the 83rd minute when Chinyelu Asher took a deflected pass from Taylor Niewoit and scored inside the far post for the 3-2 advantage. The goal for Asher was her first of the season.
However, the Cardinals came flying back to even the score at 3-3 less than three minutes later when Uremovich took a pass from Corral along the right side of the goalkeeper box and scored inside the near post in the 86th minute. With her two goals on Friday night, Uremovich has three on the season and 12 for her career.
The scored remained even through the completion of regulation and throughout the first overtime period until the game-winner from Walz. Overall, Louisville finished with a 25-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on-goal. The Cardinals also finished with a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Lexington, Ky., for the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational. Louisville will open the event on Friday, Aug. 31 against Southeast Missouri before concluding the weekend against UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, Sept. 2.
