LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Each week, UofLsports.com will unveil one member from the University of Louisville women's lacrosse's 2012-13 recruiting class. This week, Maryland native Kelli Gerding is in the spotlight.
"Kelli is the definition of a midfielder because of her solid presence all over the field," head coach Kellie Young says. "In an era when many players specialize on one end, Kelli can do it all and do it well. Her speed will impact our transition, her defensive presence and vision will elevate an area of our game needing attention, and, when the play develops, she will put the ball in the back of the net with a punch."
A native of Jarrettsville, Md., Gerding experienced successful prep and club lacrosse careers. In 2009 and 2011, she helped NEMS 2012 capture the club national championship.
While at North Harford High, under the direction of coaches Tara Buecker and Patty Murdy, Gerding's honors escalated each season. As a freshman, she was named the team MVP and, as a sophomore, she was named The Aegis' key newcomer, also earning the same distinction from her coaches. That year, she helped her team reach the state championship. The following season, as a junior, she was tabbed second team all-county. Gerding capped her career as a senior by being named the team captain.
Off the field, Gerding was recognized for her academics by being named an honor roll recipient throughout high school. She also received two prestigious honors: a scholarship from Jarrettsville Recreational Council Girls Lacrosse Program; and she was the female student-athlete to receive the U.S. Marine Corps' Athletic Achievement Award for her leadership skills and athletic achievements.
