LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Each week, UofLsports.com will unveil one member from the University of Louisville women's lacrosse's 2012-13 recruiting class. This week, Virginia native Kayla Sleece is in the spotlight.
"Kayla is a midfielder with an offensive mindset," head coach Kellie Young said. "She is quick, purposeful, fierce and competitive. She will help us put the ball in the back of the net as well as chase down her opponents to regain possession."
An Ashburn, Va., native, Sleece played lacrosse and basketball each of her four years at Stone Bridge High.
On the field, she was tabbed the 2012 Liberty District Lacrosse Player of the Year. Additionally, she was named first team all-district, a feat she achieved all four years, first team all-region and was bestowed the coaches award. Other accolades she accumulated her senior season included being named honorable mention all-Met and to the all-district tournament team, both honors she also earned her junior year. A two-year captain, she was selected as the team MVP in 2010. Sleece capped her career as the school record-holder in five categories: single-season goals, career assists, most ground balls in a season and career and most forced turnovers in a game.
In basketball, Sleece, who served as captain her junior and senior campaigns, was named recipient of the coaches' award in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
In the classroom, she was named to athletic academic honor roll all four years with the basketball and lacrosse teams, while remaining part of the A/B honor roll all four years as well. She graduated in the top five percent of her class, was tabbed an AP scholar and recipient of the faculty scholarship.
Sleece is one of three children, and her mother, Lee Ann, played lacrosse and soccer collegiately at Villanova.
