LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville women's lacrosse head coach Kellie Young has tabbed Katie Oliverio, Monica Negron and Janaye Dzikewich as team captains for the 2012 campaign.
Oliverio has been a staple for the Cardinals' offense, accounting for 94 assists and 146 points through three seasons of play. Last year, she started 16 of the 17 games she played in, scoring 47 goals and dishing out 43 assists. The now-senior earned second team all-BIG EAST and IWLCA all-West/Midwest Region honors at the end of the year. In 2010, the Silver Spring, Md., native was crowned the NCAA Division I statistical champion in assists per game (2.71) and finished second nationally in assists.
A Bel Air, Md., native, Negron is coming off one of the best defensive seasons as a freshman in school history. She became the first freshman in program history to earn IWLCA all-Region honors, being named to the second team. She started all 17 games on defense, ranking first on the team - 48th nationally - in caused turnovers (23) and second in ground balls (46), which ranked No. 23 nationally.
A redshirt senior, Dzikewich missed a majority of the 2011 season with an injury, but did earn playing time against BIG EAST foes Villanova and Connecticut. In 2009, she played in all 17 games, starting nine, and picked up 41 ground balls. The Whitby, Ontario, native ranked third on the team in caused turnovers, with 26, and was a major factor in the team's No. 2 national ranking in the category.
The Cardinals were picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 10-7 last year, with a 3-5 mark in league play. Louisville opens its season on Feb. 19 at Ohio State.
