LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24, against Longwood in Farmville, Va., looking to rebound after dropping its season-opener at Ohio State. First draw is set for 4 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
The Cardinals (0-1) got off to a quick start against the Buckeyes, taking a 3-1 lead, but were unable to maintain the pace and ultimately fell, 21-7. Sophomore Hillary Bushway filled up the box score, recording four draw controls, three points (two goals, one assist) and two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Danielle Pawliw tied for the second-most saves in a game with 15. Louisville's roster, which is dominated by youth, received strong collegiate debuts from freshmen Cat Gordon and Casey Pepperman. Gordon netted her first career goal and Pepperman won four draw controls.
Longwood dropped its first game of the season as well, losing to Navy, 20-4. Junior Jamie Brentlinger led the Lancers with one goal and one assist. Junior transfer Mollie Zimmerman recorded 10 saves and a team-high four ground balls in the loss. The Lancers struggled against Navy's defense, managing just 18 shots - three in the second period - and turning the ball over 22 times.
The Lancers are led by interim head coach Wendy Stone, who was an assistant on the staff last year. The team finished 2011 with a 10-8 record, going 5-2 in the National Lacrosse Conference. Longwood returns seven starters and has 10 newcomers.
In the two meetings between the programs, the Cardinals have taken both contests. The last meeting, which took place on April 4, 2010, Louisville earned a 17-10 victory. Bergan Foley found the back of the net six times, and Pawliw played all 60 minutes between the pipes, making nine saves for the win.
