Swimming and Diving Men Win Purdue Invitational; Women Place Second

The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team won the Purdue Invitational with the women placing second as the Cardinals broke a total of six school records over the three day event.
"Both our men and women had some inspired races this weekend establishing six new school records," said U of L coach Arthur Albiero. "More importantly, we were able to put together a good number of performances in regards to national rankings and ultimately, NCAA selections."
U of L started the evening by sweeping the top three spots in the women's 200-back with Eszter Povazsay taking top honors with a 1:57.53. Victoria Mitchell was second, going 1:59.13 and Erica Belcher was third with a time of 1:59.84. For the men, freshman Nolan Tesone was third with a time of 1:46.49. Evan Noble was sixth (1:49.07) and Brett MacKenzie was eighth (1:50.93).
In the 100-free, Kelsi Worrell touched second with a 49.68. Krissie Brandenburg was fifth (50.92) and Grite Apanaviciute was sixth with a time of 51.27. The men dominated their event with Joao De Lucca touching first with a 42.69 after qualifying with a school record 42.52. Caryle Blondell was second in 43.60. Samuel Hoekstra was third with a 44.63. Lemar Linton was sixth with a 45.32, Albert Lloyd was seventh (45.48) and Alex Burtch was eighth with a 45.63.)
In the 200-breaststroke, Gisselle Kohoyda left the field in her wake with a winning time of 2:13.60. The men were led by winner Addison Bray, who posted a 1:56.64. Kameron Chastain hit the wall in 1:58.75 and Michael Haefner was fifth with a time of 2:01.07.
In the 200-fly, Tanja Kylliainen was first, boarding a 1:56.95. Devon Bibault was third with a 1:57.44. Abby Chin was fourth posting a time of 2:01.74
Carly Munchel was seventh, going 2:04.10. Juan Lopez won the men's 100-fly with a time of 1:47.66. Kevin Bandy was third with a time of 1:48.45 and Brett MacKenzie was eighth with a 1:51.56.
In the 400-freestyle relay, U of L was second with Krissie Brandenburg (51.50), Eszter Povazsay (50.75), Grite Apanaviciute (50.68) and Kelsi Worrell(49.29)combined to post a 3:22.22. The men won their relay, when Caryle Blondell (43.16), Samuel Hoekstra 43.30, Alex Burtch (43.91) with Joao De Lucca anchoring (42.68) to combine for a 2:53.05.
The Cards had record setting performances from Kelsi Worrell in the 200-free, Abby Chin in the 100-fly, Tanja Kyllianen in the 400-IM, Joao De Lucca in the 100-free and Bryan Draganosky in the 1650-free.
"Overall this weekend was a good assessment of the work we have put in and the foundation we continue to establish for a special season," said Albiero.
