Field Hockey Travels to Providence for Regular Season Finale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team will wrap up the regular season with a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Providence on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m.
The Deal with the Cards
• U of L is currently fourth in BIG EAST Conference standings with a crucial game at third-place Providence coming up on Saturday. With a win, the Cards will clinch the No. 3 seed in the tournament which will be held Nov. 2 and 4 at Trager Stadium. A loss at Providence could result in a three-way tie with Rutgers and Villanova if the Wildcats defeat Georgetown in their final matchup.
• Louisville is led offensively by senior Amber Thomas who has a career-best nine goals along with one assist for 19 points. Sophomore Becca Maddock also has 19 points (8G, 3A).
• Sophomore Paige Monsen has a team-high eight assists on the season.
• Senior Erin Conrad carries a 1.85 goals-against average with one shutout on the season.
• The Cardinals have won their past three games and four of their last five.

Series Record: Louisville leads 8-1
Last Meeting: Oct. 21, 2011 - Seniors Heather Stevens and Hayley Turner each scored a pair of goals while Erin Schneidtmiller and Elizabeth Vance added scores as the Cards defeated the Friars 6-0 at Trager Stadium.
Scouting the Friars: Providence enters their senior day with a 9-7 overall record and a 3-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Friars have already clinched a spot in the league championship and currently stand in third place but a win by the Cardinals would push the Friars to the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Providence recently had a four-game winning streak snapped by a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 22 New Hampshire.
Caitlin Malone leads the team with 25 points (9G, 7A) while Henni Tietze follows with 22 (9G 4A). Kathi Weidman carries a 1.93 goals against average with two shutouts on the season.
Last time Out
Senior Amber Thomas's goal in overtime gave the University of Louisville a 4-3 win over No. 21 Ohio State Monday at Trager Stadium. Sophomore Alyssa Voelmle opened the scoring in the third minute of the game. Ohio State scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Freshman Victoria Stratton tied the game early in the second half, but the Buckeyes regained the lead three minutes later. Junior Erin Schneidtmiller connected on the equalizer in regulation and went on to set up Thomas's game-winner in OT.
Voelmle Named BIG EAST Field Hockey Defensive Player of Week
Alyssa Voelmle was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 22. Junior Erin Schneidtmiller was selected to the weekly honor roll.
The sophomore from Hershey, Pa., helped lead Louisville defense that allowed just four shots and only one penalty corner in a 3-1 win over Villanova. The midfielder also scored a goal in the league victory for the Cardinals.
Schneidtmiller (Louisville, Ky.) helped the Cardinals to a crucial victory over BIG EAST Opponent Villanova. The forward put the Louisville on the scoreboard and assisted on the insurance goal in the 3-1 win. She now has five goals and three assists on the season.
Honoring the Senior Class
On Oct. 20, the Cardinals honored the senior class of 2012: Erin Conrad, Haley Jurich, Natasha Leickly and Amber Thomas. Collectively, the members of the class spent 35 weeks of their playing careers ranked in the national polls and has won 46 games, including 11 over ranked opponents.
Louisville to Host BIG EAST Championship
The University of Louisville will host the 2012 BIG EAST Championship Nov. 2 and 4 at Trager Stadium. The top four teams in the conference will compete for the league's automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA tournament.
Syracuse, Connecticut and Providence have already clinched a spot in the tournament with the fourth spot being decided this weekend.
The semifinals will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with the championship game being played on Sunday, Nov 4 at 1 p.m.
