DAVIDSON, N.C. - - Senior Hayley Turner scored a pair of goals to help lead the 16th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 5-3 win over host Davidson Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (2-1) will face No. 11 Wake Forest on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
"I am so proud of this team right now," said head coach Justine Sowry. "Today's game was such a battle and full of massive momentum shifts. Davidson played very tough hockey and we struggled to get any fluidity with our passing. In the end we absorbed pressure when we needed to and we executed up front when we needed to. We grew as a program today."
The Wildcats fired off two quick shots in the opening minute of the game, but junior Erin Conrad stopped both shots on goal. Davidson broke through on its first penalty corner of the game when Christine Rua deflected a shot from Finley Amato at the 6:06 mark.
The Cards answered two minutes later when junior Haley Jurich connected on a feed from senior Heather Stevens to send the ball past Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher to knot the score at 1-1.
Louisville pulled ahead with less than a minute remaining in the first half. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner and Lacey Jurich delivered a shot that was stopped by Fisher, but sophomore Erin Schneidtmiller was there to send the rebound into the cage to make the score 2-1 going into halftime. In the first half, Davidson outshot Louisville 9-8, but the Cards held a 3-2 edge in corners.
Davidson wasted little time tying the game in the second half. Less than five minutes into the period, Amato dribbled into the circle and sent the ball past Conrad to even the score at 2-2.
Ten minutes later, Turner notched her first goal of the season with penalty corner assists from Mallory Mason and Heather Stevens to help the Cards regain the lead at 3-2 at the 49:14 mark in the game.
The Wildcats responded again, and this time it was Krista Jackson who deflected a shot from Annie Evans to make the score 3-3 with less than 10 minutes remaining.
The Cards quickly regained the lead three minutes later when freshman Katlyn Soucy registered the game-winner for her first career goal making the score 4-3 at 63:28.
Turner's second goal of the came off of an assist from fellow senior Caitlin Collins with 44 seconds remaining in the game for the 5-3 final score.
After being outshot in the first half, Louisville held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second half and finished the game with an 18-14 edge in shots. The Cards also held the advantage in second half corners at 7-3 and finished the game with a 10-5 edge.
