Freshman Michael Lippens won the Flight `A' championship and senior Sumit Gupta took the Flight `B' title on the final day of the Louisville Fall Invitational at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I am excited about this young team," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Michael Lippens becomes only the second freshman to win the U of L Fall Invitational A Division Singles. He follows the footsteps of former U of L Star Alejandro Calligari. Michael came to here as maybe the least heralded of this very good recruiting class. I always told people not to forget Michael and that he had good potential and he showed it today. It was good to see senior Sumit Gupta win the B Division. He wants to make his senior year special for the Cardinals."
Lippens prevailed 6-0, 6-1 over Chris Simich in an all-Louisville championship which pitted two freshmen against each other in their first collegiate tournament.
"I am also proud of Chris who had been playing well all tournament long but ran into a buzzsaw in Lippens. We are developing Michael's transition game and he used it this weekend successfully. He puts in extra time on his own almost every day and it is gratifying to see him rewarded for it. He exhibits the theme of our program - `humble and hungry.' Chris and Michael will represent us nicely and the other two semi-finalists (Van Damrongsri and Dante Terenzio) have great potential as well. They work so hard so they deserved all the wins they achieved."
In the `B' division championship finals, Gupta battled Morehead State's Nathan Martin to a 7-6 (5) win in the first set before claiming the title with a 6-1 decision in the second.
In `A' doubles semifinal action, Lippens and Simich fell 8-5 to eventual champions Adam Jonsson and Oscar Ayelsson of Lander. Ross Nigro and Brad Merchant also lost their `B' flight semifinal match to eventual champions Jorg Van Der Vloet and Matt Koelker of Cleveland State.
