LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore Elizabeth Vance scored twice to help lift the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 6-0 win over visiting Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. Louisville (4-2) will go back on the road to open Big East Conference play at Georgetown on Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. The Cards will also face No. 8 American University on Sept. 18.
"I'm really happy with today's performance," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "We had contributions all over the field, a lot of players got experience and we had some nice passing patterns. We can still take some lessons away from the game, especially from the defensive standpoint, but we're ready for next week's Big East opener."
The Cards wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play. They broke through on a penalty corner at the 3:34 mark. Freshman Dominique Pasqualichio delivered her second goal of the season when she connected on assists from seniors Hayley Turner and Heather Stevens to rocket a shot past Appalachian State's goalkeeper Bridgette Street.
Three minutes later, junior Amber Thomas collected a rebound from her own shot and sent the ball into the cage for her first goal of the season, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead at the 6:40 mark.
Sophomore Erin Schneidtmiller added to the lead midway through the first half. Turner dribbled into the right side of the circle and found Schneidtmiller who connected on her second score of the season to make it a 3-0 game.
The Cards continued to apply offensive pressure and dished out another goal with less than seven minutes left in the first half. Stevens fired a shot from the top of the circle to the right post where Vance connected on her first goal of the season.
Louisville entered the break with a 4-0 lead after outshooting the Mountaineers 17-1 and holding an 8-0 lead in corners.
Appalachian State opened the second half on the attack, drawing two early corners and firing off three shots in the first five minutes before Sowry settled the Cards with a timeout. Two minutes later, the Cardinals resumed the scoring when Vance struck for the second time in the game, this time on an assist from Turner to make it a 5-0 game.
Louisville's passing game continued to be effective, and led to another goal when sophomore Jacque Gerrick sent a pass from outside the circle to fellow sophomore Michelle Amon who posted her first career goal for the 6-0 final tally.
Junior Erin Conrad (4-2) picked up four saves en route to her second straight shutout while the Cards outshot the Mountaineers 25-6 and held a 10-4 lead on corners.
Street (0-5) had nine saves while Sarah Anderson picked up three stops for the Mountaineers (0-5).
