Field Hockey Tops Alumnae 6-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Haley Jurich scored a pair of goals to help the University of Louisville field hockey team defeat the alumnae 6-2 in their final preseason scrimmage. Twenty-two former players and coaches joined the Cards Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium to help prepare them for the 2011 season.
"It was a great opportunity to play against a quite youthful and energetic alumni team," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "Today's competition gave us another opportunity to form our units and get some passing patterns in there and on the flip side, work on our defensive units. It was good for us to have a chance to connect with so many players who helped build the program."
The current Cardinals jumped on the scoreboard in the first five minutes when junior Haley Jurich connected on a pass from junior Amber Thomas. Five minutes later senior Caitlin Collins sent a rebound into the cage to put the Cards up 2-0. Thomas notched an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 3-0 at the 22:39 mark. Freshman Katlyn Soucy's unassisted goal gave the Cards a 4-0 lead going into halftime.
Haley Jurich opened the second half scoring when she took a rebound from a shot from Thomas to make the score 5-0. Freshman Dominique Pasqualichio capped the scoring with penalty corner assists from Heather Stevens and Haley Jurich.
The alumnae got on the scoreboard when Missy Briery connected on an assist from Carrie Jackson Carden with under four minutes remaining in the game. Carden connected on a rebound on a penalty corner as time expired for the 6-2 final.
"A lot of positives came out of today's game, especially in the first half, getting some quick goal shots and goals on the board," said Sowry. "I don't know what they ate this morning, but there were definitely a lot of positives and hopefully we can take them into next weekend."
The Cards will open the season next weekend when they play host to California on Friday, August 26 at 6 p.m. Louisville will face Michigan State Sunday at 6 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
