PALO ALTO, Calif. - - The University of Louisville's 18th ranked Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Ohio State's No. 11 Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in Friday's NCAA Doubles round of 16 at Stanford. They become the first Cardinal team to reach the quarterfinals and earn doubles All-American status.
Seniors Childs Maksimcuk improve to 19-9 on the season and will face Florida's 17th ranked Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Alexandre Lacroix.
"It was a great match," said Maksimcuk. "We jumped on them at 5-1, then we kind of let down and it became 5-5. We got back to what we did earlier and closed out the match well."
I thought we played loose and went for our shots," said Childs. "We took the lead and when they tied it up, we did not let it bother us. It's nice to be in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament."
"I am so proud of these guys for becoming the program's first doubles All-Americans. To think how far these guys have come. They came to U of L as singles specialists ad they both bought into training really hard for doubles and this honor is a great reward for them. We hope to carry this momentum against Florida tomorrow."
