The University of Louisville's Austen Childs defeated Kentucky's Alex Musialek 7-5, 7-6 in the second round of the NCAA singles championship Thursday at Stanford. He will face fifth-ranked Michael Shabaz - the third seeded player in the tournament - in Friday's round of 16.
"It was a tricky match in which I was mentally up and down, but I am happy to win and survive," said Childs. "Tomorrow I will have to be mentally tougher and keep my emotion in check."
The senior from Mt. Munganui, New Zealand, notched his 14th straight win and improves to 33-10 on the season.
"It was a weird match," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Austen is in control winning 4-1, then Alex starts drop-shotting and brings it back to 4-4, so Austen starts drop-shotting and wins 7-5. Alex goes up a break 4-2, but Austen breaks back to 4-4 then has two break points, but Musialek survives them and they go into a tiebreaker. Both are playing at a very high level now, but Austen plays a near-perfect tiebreaker and closes it out. The difference was that Austen finished the sets better."
