
Softball Falls 7-5 to Ohio

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell 7-5 to Ohio Saturday in the San Diego Classic II. Louisville (17-9) will face Ohio State Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
The Cards struck with two runs in the second. Colby Wherry led off with a base hit and moved around to third on an error after Kristin Austin beat the throw on an infield single. Both runners scored on Hannah Kiyohara's single.
Ohio answered with a four-spot in the third. Sara Clark drew a leadoff walk and Brooke Morgart reached on an error. Both runners advanced on Jillian Van Wagnen's sacrifice bunt. Alexis Joseph's single scored Clark. Page Kemezis' three-run homer gave the Bobcats a 4-2 lead.
Louisville got a run back in the home half of the fourth when Austin led off with a walk and took second on Katelyn Mann's sacrifice bunt. Katie Keller's two-out triple plated Austin to make the score 4-3.
The Bobcats tallied three runs in the fifth. Kemezis' solo shot over the left field wall put Ohio up 5-3. Alyssa Wolfe singled to set up Emily Wethington's two-run homer, increasing the lead to 7-3.
The Cardinals attempted to rally in the seventh, but came up short with only two runs. Jennifer Esteban singled and moved to third on a base hit by Chelsea Bemis. Maggie Ruckenbrod's groundout plated Esteban. Wherry's two-out double scored Ruckenbrod to pull Louisville within two runs and bring the tying run to the plate. Ohio reliever Melissa Bonner retired Taner Fowler to end the game.
Caralisa Connell (6-3) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits and striking out two in 4.1 innings. Wherry led the Cards going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a run and an RBI. Bemis was 2-for-4. Austin was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Wethington (8-2) got the win, giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and striking out two in 6.1 innings. Kemezis was 3-for-4 with four RBI. The Bobcats improve to 10-6.
