Shootin' It with Bergan - Season-Opening Recap
February 28, 2011 | Women's Lacrosse

First game down and a great win for the Cards!
The weekend was kicked off by a Crease Club dinner held at the PNC Club Suites at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The dinner was in great company that included donors, fans in the community, the lacrosse family and team. Before we sat down for the meal, there was a silent auction of items that were donated in order to help fund our international trip. The auction was a success in raising over $5,000 dollars!
Throughout the night, we were entertained by Sean Moth's stand up and great MC skills, along with an inspiring speech by Charlie Strong. Liz Lovejoy, Jamie Ward and I also entertained the crowd with our rendition of "Juicy" by Notorious BIG as our yearly song.
The team capped the night with our scavenger hunt throughout campus that led us together united as a team on our field. Our parents and lacrosse family were waiting for us on the field as we watched a video that recapped our fall season and hinted at the success we will experience in the near future. The team was so excited to receive our bags full of gear - Christmas in February!
After a great night, we were ready for our first game. We were a bit rattled at first, but after settling in, we never looked back. With an outstanding college debut, Ashley Herbst held a shut out in the second half, with 12 saves and allowing only 4 goals. Attack was also strong with three goals and one assist from Sammy Allen, Emily Dashiell on the draw, and no surprise, Katie Oliverio with two goals and four assists. Special congratulations to Jamie Redding and Nikki Boltja for score their first collegiate goals! Ashley could not have shut out Binghamton without a strong defensive effort on our part. Leading the defense was the strong voices of Meg Ryan and Ward.
After our season opener, the team immediately started looking forward to our next game against Old Dominion rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium. Come and support as the lacrosse team looks to leave a legacy!
