TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - - Junior Tori Collins registered a career-high 12 strikeouts as the University of Louisville softball team defeated UT-San Antonio 2-1 Saturday in the `Bama Bash. The Cards (4-4) will face No. 3 Alabama at 5 p.m.
UT-San Antonio took an early 1-0 lead when Molly Fichtner led off the second with a home run
The Cards answered in the third when Jennifer Esteban reached on an error and Alicja Wolny's RBI single tied the game at 1-1.
Louisville pulled ahead in the fourth when Chelsea Bemis doubled and Maggie Ruckenbrod's single scored pinch runner Tesha Paysen to make it a 2-1 game.
The Roadrunners threatened in the top of the sixth when Carrie Monroe delivered a leadoff double and took third on Haylee Staton's sacrifice bunt to place the tying run on third with one out. Louisville starting pitcher Tori Collins delivered a strikeout for the second out of the inning and Molly Fichtner was intentionally walked to place runners on the corners. Collins got Ashley Kappler to pop up to shortstop Colby Wherry to end the inning.
UTSA had another scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh when Nikki Goff was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on Kappler's sacrifice bunt. Collins registered her 12th strikeout of the game to bring up pinch hitter Danye Holmes who fouled off four pitches and worked the count full before sending a blooper to shallow left field, but Wherry was able to catch up with it for the final out of the game.
Collins (2-2) got the complete game win, allowing one earned run and scattering three hits while fanning 12. Bemis went 2-for-3 to lead the Cards at the plate.
Staton (1-2) took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned and striking out two in six innings. UTSA was led offensively by Carrie Monroe's 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The Roadrunners drop to 2-6 on the season.
