In a highly competitive first day at the BIG EAST Diving Championships, Cardinal divers put forth their lifetime bests as competition got underway Friday evening at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on the campus of the University of Louisville.
"It was a great job by our divers," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "They dove with great poise and it was a great first day for U of L swimming and diving."
On the 3-meter board, U of L's Hannah Gadd was edged by just 2.60 points by Notre Dame's Jennifer Chiang, who posted a winning score of 337.40 to take the conference crown. Cardinal sophomore Lindsey Stephens had a score of 310.15, which was good for fifth place.
"That is the best Hannah has ever dove and the best score she's ever posted. She had a new dive and executed it very well," said Mike Zehnder, U of L diving coach. "She will fight hard and get a win and defend her 1-meter title tomorrow."
In the men's 1-meter competition, U of L's David Zamkov finished a career-high best of third with a point total of 330.50. Notre Dame's Eric Lex took top honors with a score of 355.70. Pitt's Collin Forner was second with a score of 336.15.
"David dove strong, he just faltered slightly in the last dive. Finishing third after not finalling last year shows how hard he worked and how much the home pool advantage meant to him," said Mike Zehnder.
Tomorrow, the competitors switch boards with the women moving to the 1-meter and the men to the 3-meter. Sunday will feature platform diving.
