LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior pitchers Derek Self and Travis Tingle and sophomore outfielder Adam Engel have been selected as team captains for the Louisville baseball team for the 2012 season. The selections were voted on by the Cardinal players and coaches.
Self, a right-hander from Cave City, Ky., has a 17-3 career record on the mound after going 3-3 with one save and a 2.26 ERA last season. He is tied for sixth in career wins as a Cardinal and his 3.43 career ERA is tied for seventh best in school history entering the 2012 season. He elected to return to Louisville for his senior season after being selected in the 27th Round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland A's.
Tingle, a graduate of Butler High School in Louisville, was 3-1 with one save and a 2.60 ERA in his first season as a Cardinal in 2011 after transferring from Cleveland State Community College. After spending much of season in the bullpen, the right-hander moved into a starting role during the final five weeks of the 2011 campaign.
Engel, from Loveland, Ohio, overcame a slow start to collegiate career by leading the Cardinals in hitting in the month of May last season with a .392 average to go along with 13 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 19 games. Overall, the speedy centerfielder hit .250 with 27 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 53 games played and 38 starts for Louisville in 2011.
The Cardinals will open the 2012 season on Feb. 17 against Minnesota in Clearwater, Fla., at the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge. Louisville's home-opener at Jim Patterson Stadium is set for Feb. 22 against Eastern Kentucky.
