Women's Soccer Takes Overtime Thriller at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore forward Christine Exeter scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as the Louisville women's soccer team earned a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
With their third straight overtime victory, the Cardinals moved into first place in the National Division of the BIG EAST Conference with a 5-1-2 record and improved to 7-5-3 overall, while the Hoyas dropped to 5-3-0 in league games and 11-5-0 on the season. For Louisville, it was the ninth overtime (4-2-3) game of the season, which matches the school record first set in 2007.
Exeter (Pickering, Ont., Canada/Pickering HS), with her second two-goal performance of the weekend and the fourth of her career, took a pass from senior Jennifer Jones (Louisville, Ky./Assumption HS) and scored into the lower left corner from the right side of the field in the 102nd minute of the game and the second minute of the second overtime. Through Sunday's game, Exeter leads the Cardinals with nine goals this season, the most for a Louisville player since Jamie Craft had nine goals in 2006. Exeter, who has eight goals in her last seven games, has 16 career goals. The assist for Jones was her second of the season and the third of her career.
"I never thought we established any sort of rhythm from a possession standpoint nor were we very dangerous, but when you have someone as special as Christine, you can win games," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Special players make special plays and that's exactly what she did today. We had a great weekend. Now, we will refocus and get ready for Rutgers and Seton Hall."
The host Hoyas, who entered Sunday's matchup leading the National Division, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Camille Trujillo scored on a header inside the far post after taking a cross from Samantha Baker for the 1-0 advantage. The goal for Trujillo was her ninth of the season.
That lead stood through the halftime break and deep into the second half before Exeter evened the score at 1-1 in the 79th minute with a goal into the lower left corner. The goal was setup by a throw-in from sophomore Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont., Canada/St. Ignatius of Loyola), who earned her third assist of the season. The score remained that way through the completion of regulation and throughout the first overtime before Exeter ended the game early in the second overtime period.
In goal, senior Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) finished with four saves for the Cardinals, while Elizabeth Hanna had one save for the Hoyas. Overall, Georgetown finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on-goal. The Hoyas also had a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will return home to host Rutgers (Oct. 14, 7 p.m., ET) and Seton Hall (Oct. 16, noon, ET) next week in the final regular season home games at Cardinal Park.
