Stevens previews Providence and Indiana games
The University of Louisville field hockey team will wrap up the BIG EAST regular season this weekend when the Cards play host to Providence in a pivotal conference matchup Friday at 2 p.m. The Cards will celebrate senior day Sunday against Indiana at 2 p.m.
About Louisville: The Cards are led offensively by senior Hayley Turner who has eight goals, seven assists and 23 points on the season. Sophomore Elizabeth Vance stands at second on the team with five goals and 14 points. Junior Erin Conrad carries a 1.55 goals-against average with four shutouts on the season.
BIG EAST Conference Championship breakdown:
No. 4 Connecticut (13-1, 4-0) and No. 5 Syracuse (13-2, 4-0) have already secured the top two spots in the four-team conference tournament. Villanova currently stands at third with a 2-2 record.
Louisville (8-7) is tied with Rutgers for fourth in BIG EAST standings with a 2-3 mark in league play - the Cards defeated the Scarlet Knights on Oct. 8.
Providence (3-11) is in fifth place with a 1-3 conference record. The winner of Friday's game would prove to be the tiebreaker should both teams finish with the same league record.

Series Record: Louisville leads 7-1
Last Meeting: Oct. 23, 2010 - Julie Ruggieri gave the Friars 1-0 lead, but Nicole Youman and Tuli Lim scored to give Louisville a 2-1 win at Providence Scouting the Friars: Providence brings a 4-11 record into the weekend. The Friars are currently fifth in BIG EAST standings with a 1-3 league record. They need to beat the Cards and Georgetown in order to secure a spot in the league tournament. PC is coming off of a 3-2 overtime win over Brown on Wednesday. The victory snapped a two-game skid.
The Friars are led offensively by Daniella Bernascon's five goals and 10 points. Hillary Anderson has dished out a team-best four assists on the season.
Cards vs. Indiana
Oct. 23, 2011 - Trager Stadium, 2 p.m.
Series Record: Louisville leads 7-6
Last meeting: Oct. 5, 2010 - IU won 3-2 in overtime at Trager Stadium. Brenna Moeljadi put the Hoosiers on the scoreboard in the first half, but two second half goals by Amber Thomas gave the Cards a 2-1 lead. Moeljadi struck again to tie the game on a penalty corner as time expired. Corey Brautigam scored with less than four minutes remaining to in the OT period to give the Hoosiers the victory.
Scouting the Hoosiers: Indiana brings an 8-5 record into the weekend prior to facing Providence on Saturday. The Hoosiers have lost three of their last four games, including Big Ten matchups with No. 20 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State and most recently, a 4-2loss at No. 13 Iowa. Prior to that, the Hoosiers picked up a 4-2 win over Michigan State.
Indiana is led offensively by Brenna Moeljadi's 22 points (9G, 4A). Morgan Fleetwood follows closely with 20 points (9G, 2A). Katie Griswold has dished out a team-best 12 assists.
Cards Honor 2011 Seniors
On Sunday, Louisville will honor the three seniors who will be playing their final regular season game at Trager Stadium. During their careers, Caitlin Collins, Heather Stevens, Hayley Turner have helped win 47 games, and a BIG EAST conference championship. They have also helped the Cards become a mainstay among the nation's top 20 throughout the past four seasons.
The Deal with the Cards
Louisville slipped out of the top 20 in the NFHCA Coaches' poll released on Oct. 18. The Cards have spent all but three weeks in the top 20 this season. Senior Hayley Turner leads the team with eight goals and seven assists for 23 points on the season.
The Cards entered the 2011 season at No. 16 in the NFHCA preseason coaches' poll. This marks the ninth straight year that Louisville has appeared in the nation's top 20.
Last Time Out
Last weekend, Louisville traveled to Philadelphia and suffered back-to-back 2-1 losses to Villanova and Drexel. On Saturday, BIG EAST Conference opponent Villanova built a 2-0 lead behind a pair of goals from Olivia Maggitti. Amber Thomas put the Cards on the scoreboard midway through the second half.
Against Drexel, Erin Conrad tied a career high with 11 saves, but the host Dragons used goals from Ashley Santee and Elizabeth Koch to build a 2-0 lead. Caitlin Collins pulled the Cards within one goal, but they could capitalize on any other scoring opportunties.
Up Next
The Cards will wrap up the regular season when they travel to No. 19 Northwestern on Oct. 30. The BIG EAST Tournament will take place November 4-6 at Syracuse.
Turner Passes the Century Mark
Hayley Turner dished out an assist in the 4-2 loss to No. 4 Connecticut to give her 100 career points. She becomes the fifth player in program history to reach that mark. Turner is in fifth place on the school's list for career points with 101. Jessica Javelet holds the record with 189 points.
The Rest of the Turner Report
Senior Hayley Turner now leads the team with eight goals, seven assists and 23 points on the season.
She is in sole possession of fifth place on the career goals list (35) and needs three more to tie Sherry Effinger's mark of 38. Jessica Javelet holds the record at 69.
Turner is tied for fourth in career assists (31). Turner also tied a school record when she dished out three assists in the 6-0 win over Appalachian State on Sept. 11. Nicole Youman owns the record with 52.
Fountain of Youth
Louisville features a young lineup with five freshmen and one sophomore among its starters. Twelve players - including nine underclassmen - have combined to score Louisville's 39 goals this season. Senior Hayley Turner leads the team with eight goals, seven assists and 23 points on the season.
