The University of Louisville swimming and diving team swept visiting Xavier in the season opener. The Cardinal women won 190-67 with the men prevailing 185-57.
Multiple winners included Eszter Povazsay, who won the 100-, 200-back and the 200-medley relay, and Pedro Oliveira, who won the 1000-free, 500-free and the 200-medley relay. Fanny Lilliestrom won the 100-back, 200-back and the 200-IM. Freshman Abby Chin made a strong debut with a win in the 1000-free and the 200-fly.
In the women's 200-medley relay, the U of L foursome of Eszter Povazsay, Lindsay Rogers, Raine Thompson and Aileen Cole combined forces to post a winning time of 1:43.93. The Louisville B-relay team of Krissie Brandenburg, Sara Hartman, Dani Barbiea, and Lacey Bobo touched second in 1:45.28.
In the men's 200-medley relay, the Cardinals touched first as the foursome of Nathan Kinney, Kameron Chastain, Pedro Oliveira and Caryle Blondell posted a time of 1:32.05. The B-relay team of Brendon Andrews, Addison Bray, Aaron Young and Matt Schlytter went 1:32.23.
In the grueling 1000-free, freshman Abby Chin touched first with new school record time of 10:05.33 with fellow frosh Victoria Mitchell right in her wake with a 10:05.47 time, good for second place and also under the previous record.
Pedro Oliveira took the men's 1000 with a time of 9:25.90, with Riley Martin touching in 9:42.94 and Kevin Bandy in 9:46.01 to complete the top three sweep.
In the 200-free, Breann McDowell touched first with a time of 1:53.22 followed by Lindsey LaPorte's 1:54.44. For the men, Joao De Lucca powered to a win in 1:40.23 with Albert Lloyd touching second in 1:42.04 and Carlos Almeida completing the sweep in 1:42.47.
In the 100-backstroke, Eszter Povazsay turned in a winning time of 56.25 followed by Krissie Brandenburg at 56.35. For the men, newcomer Aaron Young was first in 52.74, followed by Nathan Kinney in 53.18.
In the 100-breast, Fanny Lilliestrom was first in 1:04.22 followed by Lindsay Rogers at 1:05.48 and Gisselle Kohoyda in third at 1:05.83. For the men, Michael Haefner went 57.68 for the win followed by Kenny Crapse's 57.98 and Addison Bray's 59.54 for the sweep.
In the 200-fly, Abby Chin went 2:02.61 for the win, followed by Raine Thompson's second place time of 2:04.94. Jackie Sherrard was third in 2:07.25. In the men's event, Michael Pryor touched first, cruising in a 1:52.64, just ahead of Riley Martin's 1:53.03. Carlos Almeida was third in 1:55.22.
Aileen Cole took top honors in the 50-free with a time of 23.59 followed by Dani Barbiea's 23.64 with Lacey Bobo touching in 24.39. Senior Brendon Andrews put up a 20.54 in the men's 50-free, beating newcomer Caryle Blondell's 21.17. Matt Schlytter was third in 21.22.
Freshman Dani Barbiea won her first collegiate race with a time of 52.27 in the 100-free. Krissie Brandenburg was second in 52.68 and Aileen Cole was third in 52.76. Albert Lloyd touched first in the 100-free, Samuel Hoekstra was second in 46.99 and Alex Burtch was third in 47.36.
In the women's 200-back, Eszter Povazsay won in 2:01.51, with Victoria Mitchell second in 2:03.14. Stephanie Juncker was third, posting a time of 2:07.08. The men were led by Juan Lopez's win in 1:51.16.
Fanny Lilliestrom touched first in the 200-breast with a time of 2:17.09 and Gisselle Kohoyda was second in 2:17.77, with Sara Hartman cruising in for third at 2:25.37. Senior Carlos Almeida was first in 2:02.53 with Kameron Chastain going 2:06.63 for second and Addison Bray's 2:06.63 good for third.
In the 500-free, the freshman trio of Victoria Mitchell, Abby Chin and Erika Wozniak went one-two-three with Mitchell putting up the top time of 4:57.01. Chin and Wozniak went 4:59.99 and 5:06.32 respectively. For the men, Pedro Oliveira touched first in 4:32.50 with Michael Pryor hitting the wall in 4:38.78.
In the 100-fly, senior Raine Thompson powered in for a 56.05 ahead of Dani Barbiea's 57.43. Mary Mittel was third in 58.86. For the men, Tim Collins outreached Xavier's Sam Conchuratt with a time of 51.18. Brendon Andrews was third in 51.49.
U of L had the fastest time in the 200-IM when Fanny Lilliestrom was 2:05.71. Carlos Almeida was the fastest for the men with a 1:52.26.
In the final 800-free relay, U of L's foursome of Krissie Brandenburg, Mary Mittel, Johanna Cowley and Erika Wozniak combined for a time of 7:45.26. The men's team of Brendon Andrews, Brooks Wilmoth, Lemar Linton and Joao De Lucca put up a time of 6:58.63, the only sub-seven mark of the field.
