No. 13 Men's Tennis Defeats Columbia 4-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 13th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis defeated No. 48 Columbia 4-0 in the first round of the 2011 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Cards (4-0) will face the winner of No. 18 Mississippi and No. 35 Tulsa in the Championship match Sunday at 3 p.m.
The winner will advance to the National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 18-21 in Seattle, Wash. The consolation match will take place Sunday at 11 a.m.
"Overall, I think the guys played decently - not great," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Simon Childs and Robert Hall were a spark in doubles and Viktor played well in singles. For us to win this regional, we will need to play at a higher gear. We cannot afford any lapses, because there very little room for error. Viktor was the match MVP."
The Cardinals jumped to an early lead by winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Simon Childs and Robert Hall topped Haig Schneiderman 8-2 at the two-spot. Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk teamed to beat Nathaniel Gery and Kevin Kung 8-6 at No. 1 to clinch the point.
In singles, Louisville picked up wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 to ensure the 4-0 victory. Maksimcuk, No. 75 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Cyril Bucher 6-0, 6-3 at the two-spot to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. On court No. 3, 98th ranked Simon Childs topped John Yetimoglu 6-3, 6-3 to add to the lead. Dante Terenzio's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Rajeev Deb-Sen at No. 6 clinched the win to send Louisville to Sunday's championship match.
After dropping the first set 7-5, eighth-ranked, top-seeded Austen Childs rallied to win the second set 6-1 and was up 5-2 when Terenzio clinched the match.
